New York pub crawls: Because your regular drinking dens are like following the spin-dry cycle

West Village – PubCrawl March 1st, 2008

We’re back were we started from. This year our West Vill crawl will head west instead of east, planting us in the heart of the MPD. Bring your cash and as great a finely dress as you can so as to not look too tired hobbling down the cobble streets at 12.

This line up’s been refined a few times but should offer some interesting swill. Down the Hatch was our first bar on our first crawl back in 2006 where we hatched many of the ideas for this fine crew so it’s only natural to bring back some business – Saturdays is usually all you can drink wings and pitchers but we’re only going to be there an hour. Next down the street is a fine brew pub in Blind Tiger Ale House back in action after turning into a coffee shop after it lost it’s liquor license (bring your ID); 30+ beers on tap, two cask taps and a fireplace to quickly warm up to (if it’s lit this time) – great food and cheese here if you didn’t already fill up on wings. Barrow Street is next and can be considered a frat scene, you know, with all the drunk sorority girlies around and striped shirt guys chasing them but if flirting isn’t your thing, pick up a pint and head downstairs for some darts, pool or buck hunter. Fat Cat is a classic winter spot for drinking games and weren’t not talking quarters here; the real deal with several pool tables, ping pong (real, not Beirut) tables, foos ball and a number of boardgames to show up your skills – Jazz nights follow later in the evening. Lederhosen is a great German beer hall spot. Get your fill of brawt and brew as we take over the benches in back (I’ve already reserved a few but you may want to call now to take over the rest) – does anyone know some German drinking song? Bayard’s Ale House is across 7th over to Hudson and a very new bar resurrected by four Irish men – the 4 decade old Sazarac House has retired from this space but still holds it’s history as a NYC landmark, including stories that John Belushi used to pull up and literally put his belly on the bar. WXOU is a hole – a very simple neighborhoodie bar with just a juke box that servers up cheap strong drinks (cash only and no red bull). The Spotted Pig will be our first Michelin rated gastropub on the crawl, however, we’re a little concerned that we’ll have space enough for everyone since we’re not formally invited for just drinks and the bar space is small. If it gets too crowded, the spill over spot will be the White Horse Tavern around the corner. I love the Room in SOHO, as did the majority of the crawlers on our SOHO trip – The Otherroom is as you can tell by name a sister bar of the original. Our last spot is a joint in lower MPD at Automatic. Be prepared to have game because it can be had, just don’t expect to get to the bar for drinks very quickly…
